The song is an old one, from around 2000 I think. I’ve always liked it, so I thought it would be cool to put it in one of the Softys animations. There’s a little but recognizable sample from Kemopetrol‘s first album, which they and their record company graciously agreed to let me use for free. Big, big thanks for that to Kemopetrol, Kim at Plastinka and Kimmo at Sony-BMG. It’s a small thing, but shows the way to go.
The animation turned out to be a team effort as well. First Sini built a butterfly from newspaper, photographed it in different positions, and drew two color vector artwork on top the photos. Mikko took the animation frames and built a three-dimensional space or grid where the butterflies can be flown around. All of this might not be evident when you look at the animation, but I love the story.
After getting the butterflies “on orbit” we were quite pleased with the results. We knew it could be better, but we (or I) also wanted to release it as soon as possible. With everything finished, I suddenly thought: what if I would ask Janne who I worked with on Artek Culturelab to draw background scenery for the animation… I was hesitant at first, but boy am I happy I did send that email. With the magnificient graphics, the final result was elevated to a totally new level.
Watch the animation, see and hear it for yourself, and pretty please send feedback to me. Either post a comment below or send me email.
